Overview of TSU Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees

The Tarlac State University Master of Business Administration (MBA) curriculum is designed to produce technically competent professionals who will respond to the needs of the dynamic environment through the creation of an extensive learning framework that promotes excellence in academics and applied research.

The objective is to make the graduates responsive to local and international environment. This can be attained through quality and excellent education.

Course Aims

The course aims to enhance the skills and capability of managers necessary in the identification of business and organizational problems, and the formulation of their solutions.

The objectives are the following:

  1. To familiarize managers with the advanced managerial tools and techniques necessary in attaining the goals of their respective business and organizations.

  2. To maximize the learned skills and capabilities of managers.

  3. To acquaint managers with an in depth understanding of the various aspects of business management by training them to think critically and creatively.

  4. To inculcate managers with a heightened sense of ethics, integrity and social responsibility.

Accreditation and Recognition

1. Commission on Higher Education (CHED)

All programs of TSU are duly recognized and approved by the Commission on Higher Education in the Philippines.

Accrediting Agency for Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP), Inc.

Almost all programs of the University are accredited either Level I or Level II by the AACCUP, which is a full member of the International Network of Quality Assurance Agencies of Higher Education (INQAAHE) and also a full member of the Asia-Pacific Quality Network (APQN).

2. International Association of Universities (IAU)

The University is included in the online Information Databases of the International Association of Universities under the list of Universities in the Philippines.

3. UK NARIC

The National Recognition Information Center for the United Kingdom issued a Comparability Statement that Philippine Bachelor degree from a Centre of Excellence or a prestigious higher education institution is considered comparable to British Bachelor (Ordinary) degree standard. The UK NARIC is managed by EDDTIS Ltd on behalf of the Secretary of State for Education and Skills.

4. Ministry of Education in China

The Tarlac State University is included in the initial list of 30 Philippine Universities recommended by the Ministry of Education in China for students who want to study abroad. The list is posted in the official website of the Ministry of Education in China.

Course Structure

The Master of Business Administration is built on a 42 credit point structure comprising of two components, i.e., coursework requirement and Thesis, or a 45 credit point structure comprising of all coursework requirements.

Coursework requirement

The coursework component comprises 36 credit points which is made up of 12 subjects, or the 45 credit points which is made up of 15 subjects. Students are required to successfully comply with the requirements of each subject prior to the preparation and submission of a Thesis, which carries a credit point of 6 credits.

Thesis

The Thesis will be undertaken after Twelve (12) coursework subjects have been completed.

Students will be required to prepare a management research in the field of business administration which will consist of 10,000-15,000 words.

For students who opt to take the all coursework are not required to submit a thesis but are required to take additional three (3) elective subjects from among the major courses of the different streams of the MBA program.

Language of Study

The program shall be conducted in English and write their thesis in the English language.

Student taking the Non-Thesis Program should take Additional three (3) subjects with 9 units from among the other Streams of the MBA program. The total no. of credits are 45 units.

The course curriculum may vary from time to time as to meet the current needs in research in business administration.
The availability of subjects in the list for a given semester subject to confirmation of the University.

Mode of study

Master of Business Administration (MBA) course will be delivered by a distance mode which is implemented through compulsory lectures, optional tutorials and study group discussion. Study materials include study guides, prescribed textbooks and reference books, reading and/or e-learning materials provided by the University.

On top of distance-learning Hong Kong Students will be provided with the following supports to facilitate their studies:

1. Lectures

Actual classroom lectures will be provided to students to be lead by professors drawn from local academics and business leaders. This will provide students a forum for open discussions and interchanges of ideas within the class.

2. Tutorials

Interaction between a small group of students and the tutor will also be provided to give the students a chance to discuss and share their personal ideas and interest with their professor regarding the subject specialization of their choice.

3. Study Group Discussions

Out of timetable meetings will be organized for candidates working in a common interest group. The group discussions will provide a forum for group members to enhance critical thinking, analysis and synthesis with peers. Career Professionals will be invited to share their knowledge and experience in their field of profession.

4. Thesis Supervisors

Students who have completed the Twelve (12) coursework requirement and would want to take the Thesis component will be allocated a Supervisor to support their Thesis work. The Thesis Supervisors in the preparation of their Thesis will provide direct supervision.

Exemption from Coursework

TSU provides the opportunity for candidates to apply for credit exemption on prior learning that includes previous study from recognized institutions. The University can grant a maximum exemption of 6 subjects from core and major courses.

Application for exemption

Applications for exemption will normally be considered at the time of admission to the program. Applicants are required to inform the University for credit exemption and lodge with the Tarlac State University Hong Kong Office or course local agency together with copies of supporting documents like certificates or transcript of records or other evidence of prior learning.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the program, applicants must be a Bachelor?s degree holder, OR holder of a Higher Diploma/Advanced Diploma/Diploma in Business Administration with 3 years working experience.

Completion Time

The average length for a student to complete Master of Business Administration (MBA) is 18 months.

The minimum time allowed for a candidate to complete the course is 12 months, while the maximum time allowed for the completion of the course is 36 months.

A student who wish to extend the completion of the course must seek permission the Program Director.

DIRECT ADMISSION TO PhD PROGRAM

Students who want to get their further studies, after completion of MBA program, graduates can be directly admitted to PhD in Business Administration (Registration No. 271707) program of the University with a maximum of 12 exemption from the major and elective courses.

Interested students who would like to directly enter PhD program shall be given priority slot and special loyalty rate in tuition fee.

To apply for admission to Master of Business Administration, an application must be completed and lodged. Applications are assessed by and admission decisions are made at the discretion of the University.
